A tragic incident at a Walmart store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has resulted in the death of a 19-year-old employee, prompting an investigation and raising concerns about workplace safety. The incident occurred on the evening of October 19 at the Walmart supercentre on Mumford Road.

According to reports, the employee was found deceased, and while the exact circumstances of the death are still under investigation, multiple sources suggest that the incident involved a large baking oven. However, Halifax Regional Police have not confirmed the details, stating they are unable to comment on the manner or cause of death at this stage.

The store was closed on Sunday and remained closed on Monday as police continued their investigation. Walmart has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that they are heartbroken and extending their sincerest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased. The company is also providing support to its associates, including access to 24/7 virtual care and on-site grief counselling.

The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service. The Halifax Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration is also engaged with the police, though no further details have been released.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media and online forums about workplace safety and the practices of Walmart. Some have raised questions about why an employee would need to enter an oven and whether adequate safety measures were in place. Others have highlighted the importance of employee training and the right to refuse work in unsafe conditions.

In a separate incident, an employee at a Zehrs store in Cambridge, Ontario, was found deceased in a walk-in freezer on October 15. However, this incident was determined not to be a workplace fatality by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development).
