YouTube TV Users Missing Channels Amid Disney Dispute
LOS ANGELES, California — Millions of YouTube TV subscribers are facing a blackout of Disney-owned channels, including ABC and ESPN, due to a contract dispute that began on October 30. The companies could not agree on distribution fees, prompting YouTube TV to remove over 20 channels from its service.
YouTube TV announced that subscribers would receive a $20 credit if Disney content remains unavailable for an extended period of time. However, it clarified that new credits on accounts are not related to the Disney dispute and are instead for users who previously canceled or paused their subscriptions. According to YouTube TV spokesperson Jess Gibby, not all users have received the credits.
Amid the ongoing blackout, the sports schedule remains busy, with upcoming matchups like “Monday Night Football” featuring the Dallas Cowboys versus the Arizona Cardinals. Additionally, Election Day coverage will be affected, as many political contests, including New York City‘s mayoral election, are set to take place without Disney channels.
Disney has requested YouTube TV to temporarily restore ABC for Election Day, stating it prioritizes public interest during critical informational events. Yet, YouTube TV declined the request, arguing that it would lead to customer confusion.
The impasse emerged after Disney claimed YouTube TV was offering economically unfavorable terms that would increase costs for viewers. Conversely, YouTube TV accused Disney of trying to leverage its position in the industry for higher payments, potentially harming consumers.
As negotiations continue, YouTube TV subscribers are left seeking alternatives, as many famous sports programs and shows are unavailable. Users are encouraged to log into their accounts to check for any credits or offers available to them.
