MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Zach Edey, the two-time Naismith College Player of the Year from Purdue, has begun his professional career as the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. Following a recent game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Edey opened up about his rookie season, the challenges of adapting to the NBA, and the advice he’s received from veteran teammates.

“It’s been an up-and-down season for sure. I think that’s how most rookie years go,” Edey said during his interview with HoopsHype. The 7-foot-4 center, known for his dominant play in college, is adapting his game to fit the faster pace and perimeter-oriented style of the NBA.

Currently averaging over 20 minutes on the court per game, Edey is focused on improving his understanding of the game and fulfilling his role within the team. “Just slowing down bit by bit. I’m starting to see little things before they happen,” he explained. Edey emphasizes the incremental improvements in his ability to read plays and make quick decisions on the court.

His transition to the NBA has required him to adjust significantly from his college playing style. “I’ve been asked to play a completely different role than I had in college,” Edey noted. “I’ve been playing off the ball, adapting to playing around others, and giving space rather than getting the ball every possession.” This adjustment has been key for his success in a league where teamwork and coordination are paramount.

Edey has also drawn comparisons to former NBA star Yao Ming, a sentiment he acknowledges. “I didn’t really play basketball growing up, but I definitely got the comparisons. Even playing baseball, playing hockey…,” he recalled. A particularly memorable experience involved mistaken identity when an airport attendant confused him with Yao. “I had to tell him I wasn’t Yao Ming,” Edey said with a chuckle.

He credits much of his growth to the insight shared by teammates, particularly Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. “It’s been a lot of people giving me advice,” Edey said. “Jaren has a unique perspective since he kind of went through what I’m going through.” He appreciates everything from their guidance, contributing to his development amid a steep learning curve.

Looking ahead, Edey remains optimistic about his future and his impact on the league. “I think the future is super bright for Canada,” he mentioned, alluding to the burgeoning talent pool of Canadian players in the NBA. With a supportive atmosphere from his teammates and a deeper understanding of the game, Edey is positioning himself as a strong contender in the NBA.
