Zach Edey Memphis Grizzlies Nba Debut

Zach Edey, the highly touted 7-foot-4 center from Purdue University, is on the verge of making his NBA debut with the Memphis Grizzlies. Selected ninth overall in the 2024 NBA draft, Edey is projected to start at center for the Grizzlies as they open their 2024-25 season against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.

Ahead of his debut, Edey expressed his excitement and nerves, stating, “It’s tough to sleep for sure before a game like this,” and adding, “It’s going to be good. It’s obviously going to be a different type of level, but it’s still basketball. It’s the sport I’ve played.”

Edey’s role with the Grizzlies is well-defined. He is expected to protect the rim, secure rebounds, and serve as a solid screener and lob threat for point guard Ja Morant. This setup is seen as highly beneficial, given Morant’s exceptional court vision and ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

The Grizzlies are hopeful that Edey’s addition will help them reenter the Western Conference playoff picture after a season marred by injuries. With Edey’s impressive collegiate record, including winning the national player of the year award in both his junior and senior seasons, he is a strong candidate for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Edey’s preseason performance has been promising, with him recording 21 postups, the most in the NBA preseason according to Second Spectrum tracking. His ability to rebound and be an efficient scorer inside the paint makes him a valuable asset next to players like Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant.

Ja Morant, one of the Grizzlies’ key players, has also expressed his confidence in Edey, highlighting the potential for a strong pick-and-roll game between the two. This synergy could significantly enhance Edey’s chances of winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and contribute to the Grizzlies’ success in the upcoming season).
