WASHINGTON, D.C. — Zach Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowl tight end, is returning to the Washington Commanders after a successful season, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday. Ertz agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $6.25 million, with the potential to increase to $9 million based on performance incentives.

During the 2024 season, Ertz played a pivotal role in the Commanders’ offense, catching 66 passes for 654 yards and seven touchdowns. This marked his highest touchdown total since 2018 when he recorded eight touchdowns with the Philadelphia Eagles. His performance ranked him fifth among tight ends in receptions and fourth for touchdown catches last season.

At 34 years old, Ertz quickly became a favorite target for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, frequently converting on critical third and fourth downs. All of Ertz’s touchdowns last season were scored in the red zone, and he ranked fourth among tight ends with 13 receptions inside the 20-yard line. Overall, he caught 26 passes on crucial downs, second most in the league behind Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Ertz’s previous two seasons were marred by injuries, causing him to miss a total of 17 games. He spent his first eight-plus seasons with the Eagles, where he set a single-season record for tight end receptions with 116 in 2018. His trade to Arizona on October 15, 2021, was a significant move in his career, but returning to Washington has revitalized his passion for the game.

This re-signing of Ertz follows the Commanders’ earlier move to retain linebacker Bobby Wagner on a one-year contract. Reports suggest Wagner’s deal is guaranteed for $8 million and may reach up to $9.5 million. He played a critical role in the Commanders’ defense, leading the team with 132 tackles during the regular season and earning his 10th Pro Bowl selection.

The Commanders’ head coach Dan Quinn praised Wagner’s leadership, stating that he is a ‘coach on the field’ and embodies complete humility while mentoring younger players. The rapport between Wagner and emerging quarterback Daniels has also been highlighted, with Daniels expressing deep respect and camaraderie with the veteran linebacker.

Financial details regarding Ertz’s contract have not been disclosed. Still, his return assures stability for the Commanders’ offensive strategy under the guidance of coach Kliff Kingsbury. Meanwhile, the organization continues to explore options in free agency as they work to bolster their roster for the upcoming season.

ESPN’s John Keim contributed to this report.
