Zach Wilson Aims to Revive Career as Dolphins Backup Quarterback

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., June 11 (UPI) — Zach Wilson, the Dolphins‘ backup quarterback, is on his third NFL team as he prepares for his fifth season. Drafted second overall by the Jets in 2021, Wilson has faced challenges that he aims to overcome while in Miami.
After struggling with consistency in New York, Wilson is focused on enjoying football again. “I’m trying to be more myself and focus on enjoying the game, learning, and not getting too hard on yourself when you make a mistake,” he said. This new mindset is key for Wilson as he looks to improve and grow in Miami.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel praised Wilson’s potential, saying, “He looks like a guy that has been through some s**t and found his way through it.” This supports the notion that Wilson’s past challenges could help him flourish in his new environment.
Wilson is receiving advice from his new coaches that he has not encountered before, such as improving the timing of his throws. “It’s crazy because I’ve never been told before at past places. They’re telling me, ‘Hey, you’re late,’” he explained. This feedback is a sign of the growing support he has in Miami.
Wilson also highlighted the speed of his new receiving corps, stating, “We have so much speed. I have to trust this receiver is going to be there.” This trust is something he feels can contribute to his success moving forward.
Before joining the Dolphins, Wilson’s career with the Jets was marked by struggles, including a lackluster record of 12-21 over three seasons. He was traded to the Broncos and spent the 2024 season inactive. Now with Tua Tagovailoa ahead of him on the depth chart, Wilson is ready to seize any opportunity that comes his way.
“I’m focused on personal enjoyment in my football journey,” Wilson said. This approach may provide the fresh start he needs to turn his career around. As injuries have plagued Tagovailoa in the past, Wilson could soon find himself back on the field if circumstances allow.
