Zhao Xintong Snooker Champion Celebration

SHEFFIELD, England — Zhao Xintong made history on May 5, 2025, by becoming the first Asian player to win the World Snooker Championship, defeating Mark Williams 18-12 in a thrilling final at the Crucible Theatre.

The 28-year-old Zhao entered the final with a strong performance, leading 11-6 after the first two sessions and eventually going up 17-8. Despite a late charge from the 50-year-old Williams, who won four consecutive frames at one point, Zhao regained control and secured the title along with a £500,000 prize.

“I can’t believe what I’ve done. It’s very exciting. Thank you,” Zhao exclaimed after the match. Acknowledging the pressure from Williams, he shared, “I was so nervous tonight. Mark is still a top player… he’s the best.”

Williams, celebrating his first final participation after years, praised Zhao as a new superstar of the game. “What a potter he is over there… There’s a new superstar of the game, he’s over there,” Williams said after collecting his runner-up medal and cheque.

Zhao’s victory is especially remarkable given his comeback from a 20-month suspension due to match-fixing charges. He reflected on the significance of this win, saying, “I feel like I’m dreaming.”

Born in Xi'an, China, Zhao’s journey back to the top began with impressive performances on the Q Tour, leading him to the World Championship qualifying rounds. He emphasized the importance of his achievement for aspiring players in China and Asia.

“He’s going to inspire another wave of players in China and all over Asia,” said John Parrott, a former world champion. “There will be more to come.”

Mark Williams, recognized as the oldest finalist since Ray Reardon, expressed his admiration for Zhao’s skill during the tournament, stating he did not expect to come so close at his age.

This championship marks a watershed moment for snooker and suggests a bright future for the sport, especially with Zhao’s victory poised to inspire a new generation of players.
