Zimbabwe Wins Toss, Opts to Bowl Against England at Trent Bridge

NOTTINGHAM, England — Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bowl first against England in the one-off Test match at Trent Bridge, marking their first meeting at international level in 18 years. The match began on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. local time.
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine expressed optimism about the day’s conditions. “Due to the overhead conditions, hopefully we can utilise the first session and get a little bit out of the ball,” he said. The team includes one spinner, Sikandar Raza, and four seamers.
Ervine also reflected on the significance of the match for his team. “It’s a special occasion today. The guys are really excited to get going and be part of this Test match,” he noted. He added, “The Test in 2003, my brother was involved, and he’s watching today. It’s a momentous occasion for all of us.”
In response to the Toss, England captain Ben Stokes shared that he would have chosen to bowl first as well. The weather at Trent Bridge was cloudy, which influenced both teams’ decisions.
This up-and-coming Test season is pivotal for both teams. England will soon face a five-Test series against India and an Ashes tour in Australia, while Zimbabwe views this match as a crucial step in regaining cricket relevance after a recent defeat to a Professional County Club Select XI.
Fans can catch live coverage of the match on Sky Sports Cricket and on various broadcasters worldwide.
