Zverev Dominates First Match at Mutua Madrid Open

Madrid, Spain – Alexander Zverev made a confident start at the Mutua Madrid Open on April 25, 2025, as he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. This victory marked Zverev’s sixth consecutive win as he seeks his third title in Madrid.
Zverev, a two-time champion at the tournament, showcased his impressive form after winning his first trophy of the season in Munich earlier this month. He completed the match in just 69 minutes, displaying dominance with 81 percent of first-serve points won and hitting 32 winners compared to Bautista Agut’s four.
“[It was] a good match, I knew I had to focus against Roberto,” Zverev said. “I knew that it was going to be a tough challenge, and I’m very happy with the win.” His record now stands at 24-5 in Madrid, and he expressed his fondness for the venue, saying, “This is my favourite centre court in the world, I only lost twice here in my entire life.”
In other matches, third seed Taylor Fritz returned to ATP action with a strong performance, defeating Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4. Fritz had faced an abdominal injury earlier this year but showed resilience on his first clay-court match since last season.
“It feels great to come back and play a really solid match,” Fritz expressed. He is hopeful to build on this momentum as he continues his campaign in Madrid.
Meanwhile, rising star Alexey Mensik secured his first win since his Masters 1000 triumph last month by beating an American qualifier 7-6(4), 6-1. The 19-year-old is currently ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.
Additionally, American player Ben Shelton overcame Tomás Martín Etcheverry in a thrilling match that ended 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3. Shelton had to fend off Etcheverry serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set but rallied for a remarkable victory.
Looking ahead, Zverev’s next opponent has yet to be confirmed, while Fritz awaits a match against a currently unnamed qualifier. The tournament continues to draw excitement in the Spanish capital.
