Madrid, Spain — In a thrilling day at the Mutua Madrid Open, top seed Alexander Zverev and third seed Taylor Fritz both advanced to the third round on April 25, 2025. Zverev, a two-time champion at this event, dominated his match against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, winning decisively with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in just 69 minutes.

“[It was] a good match, I knew I had to focus against Roberto,” Zverev said after his victory. The 28-year-old star, who is now 24-5 at the Madrid Open, attributed his success to his strong performance on serve, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points.

Next up for Zverev is a match against the last remaining Spanish player in the tournament, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who advanced after defeating Denis Kudla 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz made a strong return to the circuit, overcoming Christopher O'Connell with a score of 6-1, 6-4. After battling an abdominal injury that had sidelined him since February, Fritz expressed his excitement about getting back on the clay courts. “I’m super happy I can come out and produce that level on the little bit of prep I had,” he said.

Fritz’s next opponent will be a tough challenge, as he faces 12th seed Diego Schwartzman, who won his match 6-4, 7-5. The American holds a 15-6 record in 2025 so far and is looking to build on his momentum after reaching the semi-finals in Madrid last year.

In other matches, 19-year-old Czech player Jonáš Mensik continued his impressive form, defeating American qualifier Maxime Cressy 7-6(4), 6-1. Mensik, who recently won the Masters 1000 in Miami, is aiming to solidify his position in the ATP rankings.

As the tournament progresses, expectations are high for the remaining matches, as players look to assert themselves on the clay. Zverev and Fritz, both aiming for top performances, will be pivotal in determining the outcome of this year’s Madrid Open.
