Kelsey Mitchell’s Journey: Buckeye Hero in WNBA Spotlight

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kelsey Mitchell, a former Ohio State standout and current star in the WNBA, has become a notable figure in women’s basketball since joining the league in 2018.
Mitchell was a force in college basketball, having earned multiple accolades such as McDonald’s All-American, Ohio Ms. Basketball, and Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014. Head coach Kevin McGuff recognized her immense talent as he entered his first season with Ohio State, during which the team faced challenges, finishing with a 17-18 record.
In her debut game with the Buckeyes, Mitchell attempted a staggering 27 shots and scored 26 points against Virginia. She continued her scoring prowess throughout her freshman season, averaging 24.9 points per game and becoming the second-highest scorer in college basketball history for a single season. Her contributions helped Ohio State return to the NCAA Tournament after a five-year absence.
Mitchell’s performance peaked in the 2015-16 season, averaging 26.1 points per game and earning her First Team All-American honors. She showcased her scoring ability with four games of 40 or more points, including an impressive 45 points against West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
Mitchell, who later became the Big Ten‘s all-time three-pointer leader, continued to shine during her junior season, despite a slight dip in her scoring average. She still topped the Big Ten rankings for scoring and helped lead the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament.
In her final collegiate season, Mitchell averaged 24.3 points per game, reaching significant milestones such as becoming the NCAA’s career three-point leader and surpassing 3,000 career points. After her dominant college career, she was selected by the Indiana Fever with the second overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft.
Mitchell’s rookie season saw her average 12.7 points per game, earning her a place on the WNBA All-Rookie Team. Despite the Fever’s struggles, she continued to improve her performance, averaging over 17 points per game in her subsequent seasons.
When the Fever added Aliyah Boston as the first overall pick in 2023, the team not only found success, but Mitchell also earned her first WNBA All-Star selection. The team improved to a .500 record, culminating in a playoff appearance, which marked a turning point for the franchise.
In 2024, Mitchell enjoyed a career-high average of 19.2 points per game and made her second consecutive All-Star appearance. The Fever named her a core player for the 2025 season, securing her place on the team as they aim for a championship.
