BOSTON — Rookie Kristian Campbell, a top prospect for the Boston Red Sox, has faced a rollercoaster start to his inaugural season. After earning a spot on the team’s Opening Day roster as the starting second baseman, the 22-year-old began strongly, boasting a .301 batting average along with four home runs and 12 RBIs over March and April.

However, May proved challenging for Campbell. Since May 1, he has hit just .137, going 13-for-95 with one homer and a dismal .383 OPS across 26 games. This sharp decline has led some to suggest a temporary return to Triple-A Worcester for a reset.

Despite the struggles, Red Sox manager Alex Cora remains committed to helping Campbell succeed in the major leagues. “We want him to get it here. That’s the most important thing,” Cora said. “We don’t rule anything out. But right now, he’s going to play here, and he’s going to get at-bats here, and we’re going to keep pushing him to be better.”

Cora’s strategy comes amidst an urgent season for the Red Sox, who entered Thursday’s game with a record of 30-34 after losing two of three to the Los Angeles Angels. With an upcoming series against the first-place New York Yankees, the team is seeking to turn their season around.

Campbell’s promotion to the big leagues came quickly, having advanced through the minor leagues last season from High-A to Triple-A. He likely would have started 2025 in Worcester if not for the need for a second baseman in Boston. A demotion could also open the door for promotions in the roster, such as moving Ceddanne Rafaela from center field to second base.

Amidst his struggles, Campbell’s double against the Angels marked only his second extra-base hit since April 29. His batting average in May was just .134 over 22 games. “We gotta get the offensive part of it going,” Cora acknowledged. He emphasized the need for Campbell to regain discipline at the plate, noting, “We have to get back to being disciplined.”

While a trip to Triple-A might seem beneficial for Campbell, it remains uncertain as to whether the Red Sox will make such a move. Cora is adamant that the focus should remain on developing Campbell’s skills at the major league level.
