Atletico Madrid Targets Liverpool Defender Andy Robertson Amid Transfer Buzz

LIVERPOOL, England — Atletico Madrid is reportedly interested in signing Liverpool defender Andy Robertson as the Reds move closer to acquiring Bournemouth‘s Milos Kerkez as their primary left-back.
Robertson, who is currently on holiday after a successful season that saw him claim his second Premier League title, stated last week that he had not given much thought to his future. However, with the transfer window set to open soon, the Scotland captain’s status at Anfield remains uncertain for the first time in eight years.
Kerkez is estimated to cost between £45 million and £50 million and is expected to be the top choice for Liverpool manager Arne Slot. While Liverpool aims to keep Robertson, there is a recognition that the 31-year-old defender may seek more regular playing time elsewhere.
Since joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has enjoyed a remarkable career, winning numerous accolades, including his second league title last season. He featured prominently in 33 of 38 league matches. Despite some fans pushing for a change, Robertson expressed his determination to maintain his place on the team.
“I’m not getting any younger, but I still believe I’ve got a lot to give,” Robertson told BBC Sport Scotland while on international duty. “At 31, I feel excellent.”
With his family settled in Liverpool and his position as a club icon firmly established, leaving the club would be a significant shift for Robertson. Additionally, he may be influenced by the controversy surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent departure to Real Madrid.
Regardless of the potential for a move, Robertson remains a compelling option for Liverpool, especially as they could benefit from his experience during a long season.
Should Kerkez join Liverpool and push Robertson down the depth chart, it may open the door for a transfer, either to another Premier League side or potentially abroad. Atletico is reportedly prioritizing Robertson as they seek to bolster their left-back options.
While on international duty, Robertson acknowledged the advantages of playing abroad, specifically pointing to the experiences of teammates who have found success in different leagues.
“When these players play abroad, they see a different way of playing and lifestyle,” he mentioned. “That can only help.”
Atletico Madrid’s head coach Diego Simeone is known for his defensive style and has identified Robertson as a strong candidate to enhance his squad’s resilience. With the departure of key defenders, Robertson’s leadership and skills might be exactly what Atletico needs.
Supporters of Liverpool have expressed mixed feelings regarding Robertson’s future, with some feeling he should continue to lead while others believe it may be time for younger talent to emerge. The ongoing discussions surrounding his potential transfer illustrate the high stakes involved as the summer transfer window approaches.
