Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Opens Up About Season Struggles

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Chelsea’s Cole Palmer spoke candidly about his struggles this season ahead of the Club World Cup match against Flamengo on Thursday. The young midfielder described feeling restrained by his own playing style before turning in an impressive performance in the Conference League final last month.
After Chelsea fell behind 1-0 to Real Betis in Wroclaw, Palmer shifted his approach in the second half and assisted on two goals, turning the match around for his team. He indicated that he had felt he was playing too cautiously previously. “I was sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways,” Palmer said.
While some interpreted his comments as criticism of Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca’s tactics, Palmer clarified that he aimed to express frustration with his own performance. “My comments weren’t towards the manager or anything,” he explained. “It was just a personal thing.”
As he prepares for the high-stakes match at Lincoln Financial Field, Palmer reflected on the demanding nature of the season. “You get tired and stuff,” he admitted, noting the need for rest after a long year.
Palmer also acknowledged the increased pressure on him this season, especially after a standout 2024. “Obviously, it sometimes gets to everyone. But I try to ignore it,” he said. He emphasized the importance of enjoying the game and finding balance in his life. “It’s just a game of football at the end of the day, like it’s not life or death,” he remarked.
With the Club World Cup underway and the expectation for high performance, Palmer is determined to rise to the challenge while maintaining his enjoyment for the sport.
