Alexandrova Defeats Sakkari to Reach Quarterfinals in Bad Homburg

Bad Homburg, Germany — Ekaterina Alexandrova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open on Wednesday after defeating Maria Sakkari in a closely contested match. The match ended with a score of 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3.
Alexandrova, the tournament’s eighth seed, displayed resilience against Sakkari, a wild card competitor and former World No. 3. This was their first meeting on grass, and it ended a streak where Sakkari won six of their previous seven encounters.
This victory came after both players demonstrated differing seasons. Alexandrova has shown solid performance this year, including semifinal runs at major tournaments and a title win in Linz. She opened her Bad Homburg campaign with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 win against Belinda Bencic. Despite injuries disrupting her season, she marked her resilience by reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros.
Sakkari, on the other hand, has struggled in 2025, with her best result being a quarterfinal finish in Linz. She managed to secure her spot in the second round after a tense match against Yulia Putintseva, but her inconsistencies have raised concerns about her performance on grass.
“It was a tough match, and Maria is always a strong opponent,” Alexandrova said post-match. “I’m happy to have come through.”
Looking ahead, Alexandrova will face No. 4 seed Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals. Swiatek holds a slim 3-2 lead in their head-to-head record, but they have yet to meet on grass.
This win also adds to Alexandrova’s momentum and confidence as she continues in the tournament.
