Knicks to Interview James Borrego for Head Coach Position

New York, NY — The New York Knicks are moving forward in their search for a new head coach. On Wednesday, sources confirmed that the team plans to interview associate coach James Borrego for the position.
Borrego, 47, previously served as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022. During his tenure, he led the team to the play-in tournament twice, finishing with an overall record of 138-163. He was let go after the 2021-22 season and subsequently joined the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant coach.
The Knicks, who recently fired head coach Tom Thibodeau after an impressive playoff run to the Eastern Conference finals, are seeking a new leader. Borrego is one of several candidates confirming interviews, which also include former head coaches Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins, and Micah Nori.
Brown and Jenkins were dismissed from their roles this past season, while Nori has been an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves since 2021 under head coach Chris Finch. The Knicks’ coaching search has faced challenges, as several teams have declined to engage in discussions regarding their own coaching staff.
As the only NBA franchise currently without a head coach, the Knicks are keen to finalize their decision. Borrego’s experience and recent success as an assistant may make him a strong contender.
Furthermore, Borrego’s name has gained traction in coaching conversations since the previous offseason, and the Knicks are hopeful about bringing him on board.
