Dallas Stars Re-sign Captain Jamie Benn With Strong Incentives

Dallas, Texas — The Dallas Stars have re-signed team captain Jamie Benn to a one-year contract worth up to $4 million in bonuses, the team announced Thursday. The contract includes a base salary of $1 million, with $3 million available in performance incentives.
Under the new deal, Benn will earn $500,000 for reaching milestones in games played (20, 30, 50, and 60 games). He will also receive $500,000 if the Stars win the Western Conference Final and another $500,000 if they secure the Stanley Cup.
“Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said in a statement. “There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season, and we are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.”
Benn, 35, recorded 16 goals and 49 points in 80 games last season. He added a goal and three points during the playoffs before the Stars were eliminated by another team in the Western Conference Final.
Despite struggling in postseason play, Benn previously expressed his eagerness to return to the Stars. “I don’t see myself going anywhere else. This is all I know,” he said during a team media session.
The 6-foot-3 winger is coming off an eight-year, $76 million contract. Appearing in 1,192 career games, Benn has scored 399 goals and tallied 956 points. He has served as captain of the Stars for 11 seasons, helping lead the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020, where he recorded eight goals and 19 points.
As of now, the Stars have $1.98 million remaining in cap space. Recent moves in free agency include the re-signing of Matt Duchene for four more seasons. However, the team’s cap situation remains tight as they must allocate funds for other pending unrestricted free agents.
“The franchise remains without a head coach after parting ways with Peter DeBoer,” reports indicate, as the Stars finalize their decision on the coaching front, with Glen Gulutzan and Neil Graham believed to be the leading candidates.
