Alex De Minaur Tennis Match Comeback

Washington, D.C. — Alex de Minaur claimed his 10th ATP tour-level singles title on Sunday in a thrilling final against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, winning 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(3). The match showcased de Minaur’s resilience as he saved three championship points while serving at 5-4 in the final set.

The Australian’s dramatic comeback began after he broke Davidovich Fokina’s serve when the Spaniard was on the verge of victory. De Minaur recalled his past experience on the Washington court, stating, “It’s something about this court. I did it in 2018 against Rublev. I just backed myself and committed to my game plan. If I lost, it would be on my own terms. Today, it went my way.”

Davidovich Fokina, who was seeking his first ATP Tour title, was visibly disappointed after failing to convert his championship points. He buried his head in a towel after the loss, but de Minaur showed sportsmanship by consoling his opponent during the trophy ceremony, saying, “You’re way too good to not have one of these trophies. It’s coming for sure… This is not the end, this is only going up for you.”

With the win, de Minaur climbed to No. 8 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, marking a significant achievement in his career. Meanwhile, Davidovich Fokina also saw improvement in his ranking, moving up to No. 19 and securing a spot in the Top 20.

The final was part of the ATP 500 event in Washington, where both players had demonstrated exceptional form throughout the tournament. De Minaur and Davidovich Fokina led the ATP Tour in hard-court wins this season, reflecting their competitive spirit and skill on the court.
