Zizou Bergs Tennis Struggles 2025

NEW YORK, NY — Zizou Bergs, the 50th-ranked tennis player, shared his emotional journey throughout the 2025 season, particularly after struggling mentally and physically during major tournaments.

In a candid essay, Bergs described how he felt uncontrolled during matches at prestigious events like Wimbledon, where he played against Lloyd Harris and lost after a frustrating performance. Bergs recalled feeling angry and irritated, impacting his performance and enjoyment of the game.

“If you had told me as a kid that I’d one day play at Wimbledon but wouldn’t enjoy a single point, I never would have believed you,” Bergs wrote. “Yet, unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened.”

Bergs emphasized the importance of discussing mental health issues in sports, sharing that it is common for players to experience tough phases. “It’s okay to talk about it, and it’s good to show awareness to the players and the fans,” he said.

Throughout the season, he acknowledged feeling very lost, especially after a coaching mismatch. The pressure to perform at top levels often overshadowed his love for the game. Bergs stated, “When it does not go your way, you get exposed, and that is not always easy to deal with.”

His experience working with a sports psychologist, Gert-Jan De Muynck, since he was 16 helped him navigate these challenges. Bergs has recognized that being open about feelings can lead to positive outcomes. Following a vacation in Ibiza after Wimbledon, he felt rejuvenated and ready to return to the court.

Bergs closed his essay with optimism, stating, “I’m excited to have learned from this experience and will continue to give everyone my very best.”
