Nakashima Faces Shang in Chengdu Open Showdown

CHENGDU, China — Fourth-seeded Brandon Nakashima will play against wild card Juncheng Shang in the second round of the Chengdu Open on Friday. Nakashima is coming off a first-round bye, while Shang advanced after defeating Zizou Bergs in a tough three-set match.
Nakashima’s 2025 season has been a mix of highs and lows. The American has claimed one singles title, which came in San Diego in 2022, but has struggled to find consistent success since. This year, he has recorded semifinal appearances in Mexico and Houston, along with quarterfinal runs in multiple tournaments. As of now, he holds a career-high ranking of No. 29, achieved in June.
Statistically, Nakashima has registered 418 aces this year, winning 74% of his first-serve points and converting 36% of his break points. However, he has faced early exits frequently, not advancing past the round of 16 in several events.
Shang, on the other hand, is competing as the defending champion and is currently ranked No. 2 in China. He made headlines in 2024 by becoming the second Chinese man to win an ATP title. Despite starting his season strong with a semifinal appearance in Hong Kong, injuries hampered his progress, leading to foot surgery in March. He returned to action in Toronto but struggled, falling in the first round of subsequent tournaments.
The two players have never faced each other on the ATP tour, making this matchup significant. Nakashima’s strong serve and performance record give him the edge, but Shang’s previous victory in Chengdu adds an intriguing dynamic to the competition.
The match is set to begin at 4:30 PM local time at the Center Court of Chengdu Open. Sports analysts predict Nakashima to win in straight sets, citing his current form and experience.
