San Jose Earthquakes Defeat San Diego FC in Tight Match

San Diego, California – The San Jose Earthquakes secured a narrow 1-0 victory against San Diego FC in a gripping Major League Soccer showdown on September 27, 2025.
The game’s only goal came in the 13th minute when Josef Martínez netted from the center of the box, assisted by Cristian Arango. Despite numerous attempts, San Diego could not find the back of the net and struggled to level the score.
Head coach Mikey Varas of San Diego FC was hopeful for a strong performance at Snapdragon Stadium. “It’s all about continuing to grow in terms of making our home a fortress,” he stated before the match, highlighting the importance of home-field advantage.
Throughout the match, San Diego struggled to convert opportunities into goals. Notable attempts included a header from Christopher McVey that went just over the bar in stoppage time, and a left-footed shot from Franco Negri, which was saved by San Jose’s goalkeeper Daniel.
San Diego FC dominated possession, earning ten corner kicks, but failed to capitalize on any of their set pieces. San Jose’s defense, led by Ian Harkes, held strong under pressure and prevented significant scoring threats.
In contrast, San Jose Earthquakes had their share of close calls too, with Cristian Arango and Ronaldo Vieira each missing chances to extend their lead. San Jose’s victory has given them a glimmer of hope in the playoff race as they seek to secure a postseason spot.
As the match concluded, Varas reflected on the need for improvement before the playoffs. “We created many chances but couldn’t finish,” he said. “We need to be more clinical moving forward.”
