Alcaraz Advances in Tokyo After Defeating Bergs
Tokyo, Japan — Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 1, advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo after defeating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, ranked No. 45, in straight sets on Saturday.
Alcaraz’s victory came just days after he injured his left ankle during his first-round match against Argentina’s Sebastián Báez. In that match on Thursday, Alcaraz twisted his ankle early on and required medical attention but managed to continue playing, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Following the scare, Alcaraz showed no signs of discomfort against Bergs, winning 6-4, 6-3. Although he started the match with noticeable caution, he soon regained his rhythm and did not face much resistance from his opponent.
Looking ahead, Alcaraz is set to face American Brandon Nakashima, ranked No. 33, in the quarterfinals. Nakashima earned his spot by defeating Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics, ranked No. 58, with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
This victory marks Alcaraz’s 62nd win of the season, bringing him closer to potentially securing his eighth title of the year.
