Cubs Manager Craig Counsell Dugout Changes

CHICAGO — As the Chicago Cubs gear up for the postseason, manager Craig Counsell is focusing on improving the team’s dugout dynamics. Last fall, he met with players Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ at Wrigley Field to discuss how to enhance the dugout environment.

Hoerner and Happ, both integral to the Cubs’ success, have spoken about their desire to foster camaraderie among teammates. Despite the recent $1 billion renovations to Wrigley Field, they felt the changes had unintentionally segmented the players and staff.

“The dugout used to be a cramped space that bred togetherness,” Hoerner noted. “Wrigley is a unique space, and we want to clear out some of the divides.”

Counsell has become an unexpected ally in this effort. Although he projected a serious demeanor when hired, his approach is deeply insightful, mixing analytics with a focus on team chemistry.

“He understands camaraderie is essential,” Hoerner stated. “He emphasizes that it’s our team to create the culture.”

This season, the Cubs have made several changes to the dugout, including removing clutter and redesigning areas for better communication. Shortstop Dansby Swanson mentioned the ease of accessing technology without being disconnected from the game.

Counsell acknowledged that while these modifications aren’t directly leading to wins, they symbolize the team’s commitment to building a cohesive environment.

“It’s not helping us win games,” Counsell joked, “but it’s been fine.”

The Cubs face the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card Series this week, aiming to make a strong postseason run. With discussions about team dynamics and on-field performance converging, the Cubs are focused on their collective goal of competing for a championship.
