SEATTLE — Javier Báez has become a key player for the Detroit Tigers as they enter the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Seattle Mariners. Báez’s performance helped the team clinch a playoff spot, a dramatic turnaround from last season when he struggled with injuries and confidence.

At 32 years old, the former All-Star shortstop faced uncertainty going into this season after undergoing hip surgery in August 2024. He wasn’t sure if he would even remain with the team when he reported to spring training. Despite his disappointing performance after signing a six-year, $140 million contract in 2021, the Tigers chose to give him another chance.

Looking back, the decision to keep Báez is paying off. After celebrating twice this past week with teammates, he’s become a fan favorite. “I didn’t know if I was going to come back or if things were going to get better,” said Báez on July 2, soon after he learned he made the AL All-Star roster. “You know, I got my surgery, I got my work done. It’s paying off right now.”

Báez’s pivotal plays during the season included a spectacular diving catch that helped secure a playoff spot for Detroit against the Boston Red Sox on September 28. “Most important play of the game,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said regarding the catch, underscoring the impact Báez has had this season.

His contributions continued during the recent series against the Cleveland Guardians, where he made multiple crucial plays in the field, including tagging out star José Ramírez on two attempts. “I didn’t do my job during the wild card, but that’s the beauty of it. I’ve got another opportunity,” said Báez.

Now as the Tigers prepare for the ALDS, the team is also counting on Gleyber Torres, who will lead off against the Mariners in Game 1. Torres expressed his determination to set the tone for his teammates after a challenging wild-card series. “I didn’t do a good job during the wild card, but I want to change that,” he said.

Also active for the Tigers in the series is third baseman Josh Keith, who recently returned from injury, adding depth to the lineup. Hinch mentioned they expect Keith’s presence at bat to be significant. “We wanted his bat in the lineup,” he said, highlighting the strategy behind their roster decisions as the postseason kicks off.

With both Báez’s leadership and the return of key players, the Tigers are taking a confident and competitive approach into the ALDS against the formidable Mariners, who topped the AL West with a 90-72 record. “You’ve got to play well to beat them,” Hinch noted as the Tigers prepare for this challenge.
