Anthony Davis Dallas Mavericks Training Camp

DALLAS, Texas — Anthony Davis, a seasoned NBA star, is gearing up for his first full season with the Dallas Mavericks, stepping into a vital role as both a defensive anchor and a key offensive player. After averaging 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last season, Davis is showcasing his ability to lead the team on both ends of the court.

Davis, who had a midseason trade to the Mavericks, immediately made an impact with averages of 20.0 points and 10.1 rebounds in his first nine games with the team. Now, he is focused on maximizing his contributions through rigorous training and strategic gameplay, influenced by new assistant coach Jay Triano, who previously helped revolutionize the Sacramento Kings‘ offensive strategy.

“Ball movement. Getting to our spots and creating lanes for our guys,” Davis said. He expressed confidence in utilizing similar methods that Triano employed in Sacramento, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for teammates to thrive. Davis welcomes the responsibility and is committed to being a facilitator on offense while building a strong defensive presence.

Despite his star status, Davis noted he was surprised to learn the Mavericks ranked last in rebounding last season. He said, “There’s been a lot of focus on not watching the ball as it goes to the rim, but turning and finding a body and boxing out.” He believes the team’s height and athleticism will change their defensive statistics if they maintain consistent intensity on the floor.

Over the summer, Davis underwent eye surgery for a detached retina, requiring him to wear protective goggles during games. He has expressed that while the transition is new, getting accustomed to the goggles has been smoother than expected, allowing him to focus on his performance.

A major highlight of the training camp has been Davis’ mentorship of rookie forward Cooper Flagg. Davis has shared his knowledge and experience with the 18-year-old, stressing the importance of defense. “He looks comfortable. He can block shots, he can jump, he can rebound,” Davis said. He emphasized that Flagg would face tough opponents, but he has confidence in the rookie’s ability to guard elite players.

The Mavericks have invested heavily in building depth, with players like Flagg, Dereck Lively II, and Naji Marshall adding to the roster’s potential. Davis has highlighted that team chemistry and depth will be crucial for navigating the challenges ahead this season.

As training camp continues, Davis maintains that the ultimate goal remains unchanged: winning a championship. He stated, “The goal is still to bring a championship here. I think we have a good ballclub. I’m excited to be here, and I want to win here.” The Mavericks are set to open their preseason against the Oklahoma City Thunder, offering Davis and the team an early opportunity to display their growth.
