Cavs Bet on Lonzo Ball to Boost Playoff Hopes This Season
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Cavaliers are banking on Lonzo Ball‘s unique combination of size, playmaking, and basketball intelligence to take them deeper into the postseason this year. Head coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted Ball’s intangible qualities, saying, “He has that je ne sais quoi.”
Ball, 27, begins the season in Cleveland after being acquired in an offseason trade with the Chicago Bulls. This trade involved sending guard Isaac Okoro to Chicago, a move that comes with both anticipation and concern given Ball’s history of injuries.
Once a top prospect as the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Ball’s career faced unexpected challenges due to multiple injuries that kept him out for significant time over the past few seasons. After undergoing three surgeries on his left knee since the 2021-22 season, including a meniscus and cartilage transplant, Ball is excited for a fresh start in Cleveland.
Despite his recent struggles, Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman expressed confidence, stating, “We knew that would really fit with us and give us backcourt depth.” Ball’s height at 6-foot-6 adds a valuable advantage, especially with All-Star guard Darius Garland recovering from surgery.
Fellow Cavaliers player Evan Mobley praised Ball’s playmaking, recounting a summer practice where Ball’s passing ability shone. “It was a perfect pass,” Mobley stated. “He just has a great feel for the game.”
Donovan Mitchell, another Cavs star, noted Ball’s high basketball IQ, comparing it to that of LeBron James, saying, “It’s a mature mindset and understanding of the game at a high level.” Atkinson added that such intelligence is critical in the postseason.
Ball himself shared his excitement, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to still play basketball after a challenging recovery period. “It’s a blessing to be able to still be playing,” he said, emphasizing his perseverance through rehab.
As training camp progresses in Sarasota, Florida, early reports highlight Ball’s strong performance. Chris Fedor, a Cavaliers beat reporter, noted that Ball is impressing the coaching staff and teammates alike as he continues to showcase his skills and adaptability on the court.
Last season with Chicago, Ball played sparingly due to his recovery, and the Cavaliers are likely to manage his minutes carefully as he re-establishes himself. Head coach Atkinson remarked on Ball’s positive integration into the team, calling his performance everything they had hoped for.
As the Cavaliers prepare for their preseason game against the Bulls, there’s a growing sense of optimism. Ball has the potential to be a vital contributor and fill the gaps left by injuries in the team’s offensive and defensive rotations.
If Ball can stay healthy, he might just become the key factor in Cleveland’s title pursuits this season. The Cavaliers are hopeful that they have found the missing piece to elevate their championship efforts.
