Cape Verde Seeks World Cup Qualification Amidst Rising Challenges

Praia, Cape Verde — Cape Verde’s national football team stands on the brink of World Cup qualification as they prepare for crucial matches in October 2025. The team, led by head coach Bubista, aims to secure their place in next summer’s tournament after a historic 1-0 victory against Cameroon in September.
The Blue Sharks have surprised many in the football world, not only by rising to the top of their qualifying group but also by redefining their ambitions. “We still felt small,” Bubista recalled about his early days playing for the national team in the 1990s. “Now, we aim to compete against the continent’s best.”
With only a few days left until their game in Libya on October 10, the pressure is mounting for the players. Cape Verde, who needs just three points to secure qualification, has a solid chance to solidify their place with an upcoming home game against Eswatini on October 14.
The team’s recent success reflects a broader trend in African football, where Cape Verde hopes to take advantage of the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams, which greatly benefits countries like theirs. Players, largely sourced from a vibrant diaspora in Europe, are eager to represent their homeland, bringing additional motivation to the squad.
Striker Dailon Livramento’s rise has been particularly impressive. Born in Rotterdam, he became a pivotal player during the last qualifying round, where he scored the winning goal against Cameroon. “Players want to come for international duty,” Bubista said, emphasizing the excitement and unity among the squad.
Captain Ryan Mendes, a veteran with 85 caps, understands well the challenges faced by the team. “We’ve shown we can take on anybody,” Mendes stated, acknowledging the hard work that led to their current success. As they continue to train and prepare, the team remains steadfast with their eyes on World Cup glory.
However, Bubista is cautious, noting that Libya is a tricky opponent, and nothing is guaranteed. “It’s in our hands,” he said. The team’s resilience and determination are their strongest assets as they aim for their first World Cup appearance.
