Devin Williams Yankees Pitcher

NEW YORK — Seven months can change everything in baseball. For Devin Williams, that shift occurred dramatically as he embraced his new role with the New York Yankees. Just minutes into his career on Opening Day in April, Williams faced boos from the fans as he battled to secure his first save. Now, he is experiencing cheers, especially in the critical moments of the postseason.

In a pressure-packed Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, Williams delivered 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the Yankees’ thrilling comeback triumph. His performance earned him a standing ovation, a stark contrast to the rough reception he received earlier in the season.

“Yeah, it’s awesome,” Williams said after the game about the cheering crowd. “It’s nice to feel appreciated sometimes. That was definitely a lot better than what I’ve heard for much of the year.”

Since a rough patch that highlighted a 4.99 ERA earlier in the season, Williams has become a vital asset for the Yankees. After allowing four earned runs in a loss to the Houston Astros on September 3, he has turned his season around completely. He has not yielded an earned run in his last nine appearances, with an impressive 35.3% strikeout rate.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Williams’ contribution and adaptability. “This is the time of year you’re going to need it every now and then,” Boone remarked after the game. Williams has proven capable of going longer than one inning when called upon, a significant boost for a bullpen that struggled post-trade deadline.

The bullpen, including Williams, gave the Yankees much-needed support after starter Carlos Rodón lasted just 2 1/3 innings and surrendered six runs. Williams’ outing included striking out several key hitters and maintaining control, allowing the Yankees’ offense time to rally and secure the win.

Helping the Yankees on the field is critical, especially after the ups and downs Williams faced since his trade from the Milwaukee Brewers last December. Initially arriving with great expectations, he struggled to find his footing, much to the disappointment of fans waiting for him to live up to his reputation as a two-time All-Star.

Williams reflected on the challenging season and how it feels to emerge victorious during clutch moments. “My mindset’s never changed throughout this whole year,” he stated. “I just kept showing up, and now I’m getting the results I want.”

As the Yankees face continued challenges in the postseason, they will look toward players like Williams to maintain their momentum and push toward a deeper playoff run.
