PHOENIX — The Las Vegas Aces overcame a late-game rally from the Phoenix Mercury to claim a 90-88 victory in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals on Wednesday. With this win, the Aces pushed the Mercury to the brink of elimination, leading the best-of-seven series 3-0.

The Aces held a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Mercury surged back, tying the game at 88 with just over a minute remaining. However, A'ja Wilson’s clutch jump shot in the final seconds secured the Aces’ victory.

Aces head coach Becky Hammon expressed pride in her team’s performance, stating, “They’ve put a ton of work in off the court, and I think it really shows on the court.” The Aces, the No. 2 seed, will attempt to win their third WNBA championship on Friday in Game 4.

The Mercury, who entered the Finals with confidence after a successful playoff run, now face a significant challenge without forward Satou Sabally, who was ruled out for Game 4 due to injury. Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts acknowledged the Aces’ capabilities, saying, “It’s not a team that’s just figuring it out. They’re a well-oiled machine.”

Throughout the series, both teams have battled fiercely. The Mercury fought back in Games 1 and 2 as well, but ultimately fell short in all three matchups. The Aces have consistently relied on their core players, including Wilson and Chelsea Gray, while also utilizing a deeper bench.

Despite their struggles in this series, the Mercury have shown resilience. Guard Kahleah Copper scored 11 consecutive points in the final quarter on Wednesday, showcasing her team’s fighting spirit. “We fought hard to come back,” Copper said after the game.

Looking ahead to Game 4, the Mercury must adapt quickly to fill the gap left by Sabally’s absence, as they attempt to avoid becoming the first team in WNBA history to lose a Finals series after trailing 3-0.
