Jermaine Johnson Set to Return as Jets Seek First Win in London
HERTFORDSHIRE, U.K. — Jermaine Johnson of the New York Jets is ready to make his return after suffering an ankle injury in Week 2. He practiced on Thursday, preparing for his first game since the setback, as the Jets aim to break their 0-5 start.
While waiting for his turn to speak at a press conference, Johnson observed a gardener trimming a tree at The Grove, where NFL teams have stayed since 2008. Johnson has felt the frustration of watching his team struggle on defense and has been vocal on social media about his eagerness to return to play.
“Excuse my French,” he said, “but it’s been a little sh—y,” referring to his time on the sidelines as he watched the Jets’ defense slide to one of the worst in the league.
The Jets’ defense has struggled significantly, recording just three sacks in four games following an impressive start of four sacks in Week 1. Their defensive issues have been exacerbated by a high number of penalties and missed tackles, leaving them at the bottom of the league in numerous categories.
“We have to be better. We can’t be the reason we lose,” said Johnson, emphasizing the team’s need for accountability. “Coach [Aaron Glenn] has had our back… it’s our job to put a good product out there.”
Team captain Quinnen Williams echoed Johnson’s sentiments, stating the defense has been the main issue causing the team’s poor performance. “We are 0-5. The defense has been the problem, the reason why we are 0-5,” Williams said, advocating for immediate change.
Johnson’s presence could be pivotal as the Jets face the Denver Broncos this Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Williams commented on the urgency of the situation, noting that the coaches have provided solutions that the players need to implement on the field.
“When you’re probably the worst defense in the league, you have to fix things if you want to win football games,” Williams added. Johnson’s return may inject new energy into the defense, which requires coordination and toughness to improve.
With both teams struggling, the Jets will aim to capitalize on their talent and finally secure a win overseas. After weeks of disappointing performances, the players-only meeting held by the defense indicates they are actively seeking solutions and accountability among themselves.
