Zach Benson Set for Season Debut as Sabres Seek First Win
Buffalo, NY — The Buffalo Sabres are looking for their first win of the season as they host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday at KeyBank Center. Despite recent moments of offensive potential, such as a third-period push in Boston and an energetic start against Colorado, the Sabres have struggled to maintain consistent play, scoring only two goals and beginning the season with an 0-3-0 record.
Coach Lindy Ruff expressed the need for the team to improve its efforts when entering the offensive zone. “When you look at our entries, I need more effort,” Ruff said following a lengthy practice on Tuesday. “We have to get behind people quicker.” The Sabres’ current power play sits at 0-for-11, further complicating their offensive output.
Ruff also commented on missed scoring opportunities, noting that Buffalo has not capitalized on all their chances. “You’ve got to take advantage of those when you break a team down; we didn’t,” he stated.
This matchup could provide a chance for Buffalo to rectify its goals as the Senators also face challenges, allowing 10 goals over their last two losses. Ottawa’s captain, Brady Tkachuk, will miss the game due to a significant hand injury sustained during a previous contest.
Zach Benson is set to make his season debut after recovering from a facial injury that sidelined him for the first three games. He participated in practice on Tuesday and donned a face shield during the morning skate on Wednesday. Along with Benson, Jiri Kulich will take to the ice with Jordan Greenway and Mason Geertsen during the game.
The puck drops at 7 p.m., with the Sabres hoping to turn around their early season struggles. They had a successful run against Ottawa last year, winning all four matchups with a notable goal differential of plus-12.
