Randy Johnson Questions Cal Raleigh’s Catching Technique in ALCS Showdown

SEATTLE, Wash. — Baseball legend Randy Johnson has raised eyebrows with his comments regarding Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh’s one-knee catching stance during the American League Championship Series (ALCS). As the Toronto Blue Jays inch closer to clinching the ALCS title, Johnson has questioned why analysts have largely overlooked this controversial technique.
Johnson highlighted a critical observation, stating, “Announcers won’t say anything about the 1 knee catching, will they? How’s it working out for Seattle?” His comments emphasize the ongoing debate about Raleigh’s defensive mechanics.
An analysis by MLB.com in July 2025 revealed that catchers employing the one-knee stance had a higher fielding value compared to their two-knee counterparts. Yet, the statistics might be misleading, as this approach now accounts for 96 percent of pitches received in Major League Baseball, skewing perceptions of its effectiveness.
Despite uncertainties surrounding his defensive style, Raleigh has excelled offensively this season. He drove in 125 runs, marking him as one of the top players in the league. With a .247 batting average and a .359 on-base percentage, he has been instrumental to Seattle’s lineup, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
The Blue Jays recently tied the ALCS at two games apiece, with pitcher Max Scherzer regaining form. Game 5 is set to feature a pitching rematch between Kevin Gausman and Bryce Miller as both teams vie for a spot in the World Series. Johnson’s focus on Raleigh’s mechanics adds another layer of intrigue to this playoff battle.
Toronto’s playoff journey is further complicated by the status of shortstop Bo Bichette, who is recovering from a left knee injury endured on September 6. His absence has left a gap in the Blue Jays’ batting order, where he was contending for the American League hits title with 181 hits before getting hurt.
Keegan Matheson from MLB.com reported, “Bichette, who also took a run at being ready for this original ALCS roster before feeling some discomfort, is absolutely an option for the World Series if Toronto can advance.” His rehabilitation process has progressed, with increased running drills but pending full medical clearance.
If Toronto successfully navigates past Seattle, Bichette’s return could provide a crucial boost against the Dodgers, who currently lead their series against Milwaukee. The prospect of his bat rejoining the team adds significant depth, especially during the high-stakes games ahead.
