ATHENS, Ga. — Gunner Stockton‘s tenure as Georgia‘s starting quarterback echoes Stetson Bennett‘s early experiences, drawing noteworthy comparisons as both players have navigated challenging paths to success on the field.

Stockton, who is in his fourth year, began his journey as a scout-team quarterback much like Bennett did a few seasons prior. Defensive players recall Stockton emulating Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud during practices prior to the 2022 Peach Bowl, performing with impressive skill.

“Gunner was slinging it like C.J. out there,” said linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson.

As Stockton took the reins this season, it marked a continuation of Bennett’s legacy at Georgia. Bennett, a walk-on who became a champion, had his share of ups and downs as well. Like Bennett, Stockton has shown flashes of brilliance alongside areas that still need improvement.

In his first eight starts, Stockton has thrown for 1,569 yards and 13 touchdowns but has also recorded six interceptions. His record stands at 6-2, and he has demonstrated clutch ability in late-game situations, proving he can be a reliable leader.

Aaron Murray, a former Georgia quarterback, expressed optimism about Stockton’s potential: “What Gunner brings to the table is more than enough to win a championship.”

However, comparisons to Bennett highlight the differences in their paths, as Bennett had to overcome significant challenges in his attempt to secure a starting role. In contrast, Stockton came in as a highly-regarded four-star recruit.

This season, Stockton has been working on improving his pocket awareness after facing challenges against tough defenses. After experiencing difficulties with turnovers, he explained, “I just need to cut it loose sometimes and just play ball.”

Despite the ups and downs, Stockton has showcased his ability to perform under pressure, including key plays in crucial moments. His recent performances, including a touchdown pass during a comeback win against Tennessee, have positioned him as a rising player with potential for growth.

As the season unfolds, analysts are keeping their eyes on Stockton’s development, aware of the competition he faces from incoming prospects. Notably, five-star recruit Jared Curtis is preparing to join the team next spring, potentially adding to the quarterback depth at Georgia.

With Stockton continuing to cement his place as the starter, he has the chance to carve out his own legacy at Georgia, following in Bennett’s formidable footsteps.
