Buckeyes Stars Eye Heisman Recognition Amid Hot Streak
MADISON, Wis. — Ohio State‘s stars Julian Sayin and Marvin Smith are making their cases for the Heisman Trophy as the Buckeyes eye a strong finish to the season. Both players have showcased exceptional talent, leading the team to victories with dominant performances.
Heading into a Week 8 matchup against Wisconsin, Smith had recorded 40 catches for 505 yards and 10 touchdowns, although he has yet to surpass 100 receiving yards against a Power 5 opponent. As defenses focus on him, he still remains a critical component of Ohio State’s offense.
Sayin, the Buckeyes’ quarterback, has been efficient in his execution. Coming into the game, he completed 78.4% of his passes for 1,479 yards and 15 touchdowns. Against Wisconsin, he showcased his skill by completing 23 of 26 attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, while maintaining a strong pace for the Big Ten record of consecutive games above 70% completion.
Ohio State’s coaching strategy has leaned towards efficiency over explosiveness, potentially limiting the opportunities for both players to shine in the Heisman conversation. However, as the season advances, there may be a shift in offensive strategy to allow them to showcase their abilities more prominently.
As Smith and Sayin come into November, the pressure is on for the Buckeyes to elevate their game. Championships and the Heisman are won in the later stages of the season. Both players currently rank third and fourth in the Heisman odds, respectively, behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza and Alabama‘s Ty Simpson.
The Buckeyes hope that if the coaching staff adjusts their game plan, they can put both Smith and Sayin in contention for college football’s most prestigious awards. With a history of Heisman winners at Ohio State, fans are eager to see if this duo can break a nearly two-decade drought.
