DENVER, Colorado — With the NBA season opener just days away, Aaron Gordon is gearing up for a critical role with the Denver Nuggets. As the team prepares to defend their championship, Gordon emphasizes the importance of his defensive contributions to their success.

After an intense offseason focused on improving his physical condition, Gordon, 30, aims to lead the Nuggets on both ends of the court. “I’m just worried about defense,” Gordon said. “I’m gonna just turn up on that end of the floor and let the cards fall where they may after that.” Gordon’s commitment to defense comes as the Nuggets ranked in the bottom ten for defensive efficiency last season, a steep decline from their previous six years of solid performance.

Gordon’s unique ability to adapt and improve has made him a pivotal player in the Nuggets’ lineup. His past performances have demonstrated that he can excel without needing to be the primary offensive option. This adaptability has drawn comparisons to Chris Bosh during the Miami Heat’s dynasty years.

“I think if we get to around (the) top 10 defensively, it’s going to put us in a position to win it all,” Gordon noted regarding the team’s goals for this season. The Nuggets have bolstered their roster with new additions, including Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown, which may provide the depth needed to support Gordon’s defensive efforts.

As the regular season approaches, the Nuggets see Gordon’s health as essential for their title pursuit. Last season, he played through injuries, proving his tenacity on the court. Although he displayed signs of struggle at times, Gordon remains optimistic about his ability to impact the game.

“I definitely wouldn’t say (this is my) athletic prime,” Gordon quipped. “But I think there’s a point where the IQ and your skill set and your athleticism all kind of meet at a certain level.” His focus this offseason was to regain his explosiveness and become a dependable defensive player.

Historically, Gordon has performed at a high level even on one leg, overcoming a calf injury that hindered his spring performance. Meanwhile, analysts like NBC Sports’ Reggie Miller recognize Gordon’s contributions, stating, “I’m not sure they win that championship if it wasn’t for Aaron Gordon and his defense.”

As preparations continue for their season opener against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, October 26, Gordon’s leadership and commitment to defense will be watched closely by fans and analysts alike. The Nuggets hold high hopes for Gordon to pave the way toward another successful championship run in the 2025-26 season.
