Michael Vick Fires Coaches Amid Rough Start at Norfolk State
Norfolk, Virginia – Michael Vick, in his first season as head coach of Norfolk State, has made significant coaching changes after a disappointing 1-6 start. The Spartans are allowing an average of 35.6 points per game, prompting Vick to dismiss several members of his defensive coaching staff on Tuesday.
Vick, the former NFL star, did not disclose the names of the coaches he fired but emphasized the importance of leadership in his decision-making. “That’s my job as a leader,” Vick said, as reported by the Virginian-Pilot. “I expect certain standards, and as long as I’m the head coach, I’m gonna make the right decision, do what’s best for the team.”
Despite having no prior coaching experience, Vick was hired by Norfolk State due to his local roots. He grew up in Newport News and had a standout college career at Virginia Tech before his controversial NFL tenure, which included a prison sentence for dogfighting.
Vick’s first win as a coach came on September 6, when Norfolk State defeated Virginia State in overtime, 34-31. However, the team has faced difficulties, losing five straight games and allowing at least 31 points in four of those matchups.
Reports from user @OffScript_Vidz indicated the firing of defensive coordinator Terence Garvin and two others, with defensive backs coach Jameel Smith being identified as one of the dismissed coaches by the Virginian-Pilot. Interestingly, the Norfolk State football staff page still lists Garvin and Smith in their positions.
Reflecting on the tough decision to let coaches go, Vick acknowledged the challenges of being a first-year head coach. “It wasn’t easy,” he said. “But it’s been a hell of an experience, and I’m enjoying every minute of growing every day.”
Vick expressed confidence in his players, indicating they remain unaffected by the recent changes. Norfolk State is preparing to face South Carolina State this Saturday, with Vick stating, “My players are going to follow me in everything I do. Our energy was high yesterday. We’re excited about moving forward.”
