Drew Barrymore Interviews Diane Lane on ‘The Outsiders’ Experiences
NEW YORK, NY — Oscar-nominated actress Diane Lane recently opened up about her experience filming the 1983 classic ‘The Outsiders‘ during an episode of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show.’ Host Drew Barrymore asked Lane about working alongside some of Hollywood’s soon-to-be biggest male stars, including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, and Patrick Swayze.
“What was it like to be with literally every single young man who would become the biggest male movie stars?” Barrymore inquired. Lane responded with a laugh, saying, “It was hot! It was great.” However, she also admitted that it sometimes felt overwhelming to be surrounded by so much male energy.
“It was kind of… too much testosterone for one girl,” Lane confessed. “So I kept to myself. But I was definitely pinching myself. I was definitely overwhelmed.” Barrymore sympathized with Lane’s feelings, jokingly recalling that the film made her realize, “I like boys. I was like, ‘Oh wow, I get it now.'”
Based on S.E. Hinton‘s novel, ‘The Outsiders’ follows a violent rivalry between two gangs: the Greasers, from a working-class background, and the affluent Socs. The film, set in 1964 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, highlights the tragic consequences that unfold when friendship crosses gang lines.
Lane also shared a fond memory from filming, recalling a scene at a drive-in theater with co-star C. Thomas Howell, who portrayed Ponyboy Curtis. “I remember when we were at the movie theater and they were creating this windstorm with huge fans and cocoa powder to replicate dust,” Lane explained. “By the end of the night, we would just be like, white striping. Like, ‘Mmm! That’s good!’ We all looked tan and sweet.”
‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ airs weekdays on CBS, and Lane’s candid discussion about her experiences offers a glimpse into the making of this iconic film.
