Luka Dončić to Miss a Week with Finger Sprain and Leg Contusion
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić will be sidelined for at least a week due to a left finger sprain and a lower leg contusion, the team announced Sunday morning. Dončić, who has been a standout performer early in the season, will be reevaluated next week.
Coach JJ Redick addressed the situation before Sunday’s game against the Sacramento Kings, saying, “It just kind of was something that happened. I wasn’t even aware of it after the game.” Redick emphasized the team’s need to be cautious as Dončić’s injury had not been immediately apparent.
The Lakers, who are already missing LeBron James due to sciatica, are feeling the impact of Dončić’s absence. The 26-year-old has been on a historic scoring pace, averaging 46 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists in his first two games. His dazzling performance included a 49-point game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dončić’s injury means he will miss critical matchups this week, including games against the Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Timberwolves. This absence puts added pressure on his teammates to step up in scoring, particularly Austin Reaves, who is averaging 25.5 points this season.
With Dončić and James out, the Lakers face an uphill battle as they navigate a demanding schedule in the competitive Western Conference. The team’s depth will be tested, but Redick and the coaching staff are determined to adapt to the circumstances.
The health of Dončić will be pivotal not only for the team’s immediate plans but also in their longer-term aspirations for the season.
