Deandre Ayton Lakers Injury News

LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Lakers will be without center Deandre Ayton for their game against the Miami Heat on Sunday night due to back spasms. Ayton was initially listed as probable but was downgraded to questionable just hours before the game before being ruled out.

Ayton experienced tightness and spasms in his back, leading Lakers head coach JJ Redick to exercise caution when making the decision. This marks Ayton’s second consecutive game missed, as he did not play in the second half of Friday’s match against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Jaxson Hayes was set to start in Ayton’s place, while Jarred Vanderbilt is expected to take on backup center duties. Christian Koloko may also see time, though Redick has typically favored smaller lineups when a center is unavailable.

In recent games, Ayton has shown his ability to impact the offense and defense, with Redick acknowledging his importance. “DA was great,” Redick said after a recent win. “I thought his patience for the game was really good.”

The Lakers are already dealing with multiple injury challenges this season. In addition to Ayton, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were ruled out of Monday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers due to injuries. The Lakers have had to adapt quickly, especially with a challenging schedule ahead.

Despite Ayton’s absence, the Lakers are looking for ways to remain competitive. They are scheduled to return home to face the San Antonio Spurs after the game against the Blazers.
