Rams Kicker Joshua Karty Struggles as Team Signs New Options
LOS ANGELES, California — The Los Angeles Rams are regrouping as they prepare for their next game against the San Francisco 49ers after a dismal performance from kicker Joshua Karty. Karty, who has the lowest field goal percentage in the NFL at 66.7%, has struggled significantly this season, prompting head coach Sean McVay to express his frustration.
“It can’t continue like this; it’s gone on far too long,” McVay said. Karty has had four kicks blocked this year and has missed multiple field goals from various distances, further complicating the Rams’ season as they aim for a Super Bowl contention.
In an effort to improve the kicking game, the Rams signed Harrison Mevis to their practice squad. The 23-year-old, who comes from the University of Missouri and carries the nickname “The Thiccer Kicker,” has not played in an NFL regular season game before. Meanwhile, veteran long-snapper Jake McQuaide has also joined the team to shore up special teams.
Karty’s struggles have put extra pressure on the team as they face a competitive division rival. The Rams have been dealing with inconsistent kicker situations throughout the year and cannot afford mistakes as they challenge for playoff positions.
“It’s going to cost us,” McVay warned about the ramifications of poor kicking on their season success. With the 49ers currently leading their division, the upcoming game takes on added significance. The Rams not only need to address their kicking woes but also get back on track in the tightly contested NFC West.
As Karty faces scrutiny, the team’s decisions in the coming weeks will determine how they navigate the season’s challenges and secure a viable path toward the postseason.
