Miami Hurricanes Struggling to Fill Seats Ahead of Syracuse Game
Miami, FL — The Miami Hurricanes have faced criticism this season for failing to fill their home stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, which has a capacity of 65,000. Despite the team’s attempts to increase attendance, including selling tickets for as low as $4 for an upcoming game against Syracuse, turnout remains disappointing.
This weekend’s matchup against Syracuse on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. comes at a critical moment in the Hurricanes’ season. Despite sitting at 6-2 and having a shot at the College Football Playoff, local fan engagement is in question.
Attendance issues have been a recurring theme for the Hurricanes, especially for games scheduled during the day against less popular opponents. While a night game against a ranked team like Notre Dame attracts fans, a 3:30 start against a struggling Syracuse team does not. Estimates suggest only around 40,000 fans attended the last home game against the Orange.
The empty seats have caught the attention of commentators and fans alike, leading to discussions on social media about the lack of support. Factors such as the stadium’s location being 45 minutes from campus and various entertainment options available in South Florida may contribute to the low turnout.
Meanwhile, Syracuse is also facing challenges as the team seeks three more wins to become bowl eligible. Coach Fran Brown has acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly at the quarterback position. He has opted to start freshman walk-on Joe Filardi after benching redshirt sophomore Rickie Collins. Filardi’s performance last week raised concerns, as he completed only four of 18 passes.
In preparation for the Miami game, Syracuse will need to overcome their current five-game losing streak. Despite their shortcomings, Miami is working on maintaining a positive mindset. The Hurricanes’ linebacker Mo Toure stated, “The losses motivate us, just in general. We all come in every single week trying to attack the week so we can get a win at the end of the week.”
Along with on-field issues, injuries have also impacted both teams. Miami will be without its top running back, Mark Fletcher Jr., who has recorded 636 yards and nine touchdowns this season. As both teams prepare for Saturday’s game, the focus will remain on turning things around before the end of the season.
