NEW YORK (AP) — New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan will miss Sunday night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings due to personal reasons, the team announced. Specific details about Sullivan’s absence were not provided.

In Sullivan’s absence, assistant coaches David Quinn and Joe Sacco will take charge of the team’s bench during the game. According to a team spokesperson, Quinn is expected to address the media during the postgame news conference.

This season marks Sullivan’s first as the head coach of the Rangers. Before Sullivan, Quinn held the head coach position from 2018 to 2021 before being let go. After his time with the Rangers, Quinn coached in San Jose from 2022 to 2024 and worked on Sullivan’s staff in Pittsburgh last season. He returned to New York to assist Sullivan this year.

Quinn is also set to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Olympic team during the upcoming Winter Olympics.
