Anthony Edwards Faces Unprecedented Shooting Slump
Minneapolis, MN – Anthony Edwards, the star guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is experiencing the worst shooting slump of his career. After a promising start to the season, Edwards has dropped to an uncommon low in three-point shooting.
Earlier this month, Edwards appeared invincible from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 19 three-pointers in the initial games. However, a hamstring injury sidelined him for a week. Upon his return, he made 20 of 39 shots from three-point range over a four-game stretch and achieved at least 20 threes in such a span for just the sixth time in his career.
Hopes were high as Edwards entered last week’s game against the Sacramento Kings with a solid shooting percentage of 50% from long range. However, those expectations faced a stark reality when he went 1 for 7 from deep against the Kings and followed it up with 0 for 8 against the Denver Nuggets. He made only 1 of 7 shots against the Dallas Mavericks and 1 of 8 against the Washington Wizards, totaling 3 for 30 in those outings.
This slump marks a historic feat in the NBA, as Edwards became the first player to hit at most one and attempt at least seven three-pointers in four consecutive games. Prior to this, his worst four-game stretch was back in spring 2024, where he was 5 for 31, but this current slump is far more extensive.
Despite his struggles, the Timberwolves have managed to secure victories against lesser teams. Edwards has still contributed in other areas, scoring on two-point shots, drawing fouls for free throws, and playing solid defense with at least two steals in each of the past four games.
Looking ahead, the Timberwolves will face a major test against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. The Suns have been in strong form, winning 8 of their last 10 games. Following that, Edwards will encounter the NBA-leading Oklahoma City Thunder next Wednesday. Although his current shooting woes raise concerns, historical performance indicates Edwards is likely to recover soon.
