Carr Brothers Honor Late Sibling While Competing in College Football
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Carr family has made a name in football, with CJ Carr leading Notre Dame as their starting quarterback this season. The ninth-ranked Irish hold a 9-2 record and are vying for a College Football Playoff spot. Meanwhile, Tommy Carr, CJ’s brother, recently committed to Michigan after wrapping up his senior year at Saline.
The Carr family’s ties to Michigan run deep. Parents Jason and Tammi both attended the university, with Jason playing quarterback and Tammi’s father, Tom Curtis, an All-American safety. Their grandfather, Lloyd Carr, coached the Wolverines for 13 seasons. The family’s love for Michigan was evident, but it was a different story for Chad, the Carrs’ little brother, who infamously cheered for the opposing team.
Chad passed away ten years ago at the age of five after a long battle with pediatric brain cancer. To commemorate this anniversary, CJ shared cherished memories of Chad’s playful spirit. “He always wanted to get a rise out of us,” CJ recalled. “He thought it was the funniest thing in the world.”
Although Chad wasn’t as passionate about sports as his brothers, he had a knack for humor, often pulling pranks and making his brothers laugh. To give Chad companionship, the family welcomed a mini-labradoodle named Tootie, who remained by Chad’s side until his passing. CJ shared humorous moments, such as Chad’s reaction when Tootie had accidents at home, bringing joy to an otherwise tough time.
As CJ navigated his college recruitment, Michigan was a top contender, but he ultimately chose Notre Dame. This choice surprised many, given the family’s deep roots in Michigan football. However, CJ found inspiration in Chad’s spirit of doing the unexpected. “Chad taught us to try new things,” CJ said. “He wasn’t afraid to go against the grain.”
In honor of Chad, the Carr family created a foundation focused on supporting research and families affected by pediatric brain cancer. CJ has emerged as a key player in his redshirt freshman season, ranking 15th nationally with 21 passing touchdowns.
“Chad’s journey inspires me every day,” CJ expressed. “If he could face chemotherapy with a smile, I can handle my challenges.”
