Dana Evans Wnba Finals Game 1

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Aces started the 2025 WNBA Finals with a strong performance, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 86-79 in Game 1 on Friday night. Dana Evans led the Aces off the bench, scoring 21 points and hitting five three-pointers in just 26 minutes of play.

A'ja Wilson contributed significantly to the Aces’ victory, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists and blocking two shots. Despite a rough shooting night, Wilson’s all-around play was crucial for the team.

The Aces’ bench also made a difference, with another player adding 18 points. The largest lead for Las Vegas during the game was just five points, illustrating the competitive nature of the matchup.

For the Mercury, who were looking to claim their fourth WNBA championship, it was Diana Taurasi who shined the brightest, matching Evans with 21 points and tying a WNBA Finals record for most three-pointers in a half with five. Other notable performances included Kahleah Copper with 19 points and Alyssa Thomas, who recorded a near triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists.

Before the game, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert addressed ongoing concerns from players about league operations, promising to improve communication and transparency. The Commissioner expressed her commitment to the league and its players and announced Game 2 would take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.

The Aces have shown impressive teamwork throughout the playoffs, leading the postseason with the highest shooting percentage at 48.5%. They also excel in both blocks and steals per game.

The Mercury, while viewed as underdogs, have showcased resilience by eliminating the reigning Finals participants to reach this stage. If victorious in the Finals, they could tie the Aces for the second-most championships in WNBA history.

Game 2 is set for Sunday, promising another exciting contest as both teams vie for the championship title.
