AEP Ohio Customers Face Rate Increase This Summer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) is urging AEP Ohio customers to carefully check their utility bills as a new pricing structure will be implemented on June 1, 2025.
The changes will raise residential rates by nearly 2 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), setting the cost at $0.0997 per kWh for customers who are not enrolled with a competitive supplier.
“It is important for consumers to be aware of pricing changes impacting their electricity bills this summer,” said PUCO Chair Jenifer French. “The PUCO is available to assist Ohioans to understand their electric bill, and what options they have to manage their bills year round.”
The standard service offer rates, also known as default rates, reflect the cost of energy delivered by local utilities. AEP Ohio holds periodic auctions where wholesale suppliers bid to provide power. By law, AEP Ohio is required to pass these costs to consumers without making a profit.
Many AEP Ohio customers can choose a competitive supplier. The “price-to-compare” (PTC) on monthly utility bills helps customers see if switching suppliers might save them money. Energy Choice Ohio offers Apples-to-Apples charts that allow consumers to compare offers from competitive suppliers with their utility’s standard service offer.
For those who do not select a competitive supplier or a local government aggregation program, service will proceed under the local utility’s standard service offer. Consumers can also explore budget billing, payment plans, and assistance programs. For more information, Ohioans can reach the PUCO Call Center at (800) 686-PUCO (7826).
