African Football Playoffs 2026 World Cup

RABAT, Morocco — Africa’s World Cup qualifying campaign reaches a dramatic climax this week with four teams vying for a coveted playoff spot. The inter-confederation playoffs will determine which teams will represent the continent in North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Starting Thursday, Nigeria will face Gabon at Moulay Hassan Stadium, while Cameroon will take on the Democratic Republic of Congo at Al Barid Stadium. The winners will meet in the final on Sunday, with the victor earning a spot in the March playoffs.

This World Cup cycle offers more places for African teams than ever before, with nine guaranteed spots and a chance for two more through the playoffs. Already qualified are Morocco, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, and others, who topped their qualifying groups.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles only finished second in their group to rivals South Africa. Despite starting poorly, they regained form under coach Eric Chelle, who took charge earlier this year.

Cameroon, known for its history in World Cup football, fell behind Cape Verde in their group standings, leading to questions about their team organization. Issues within the federation have impacted their performance, and their head coach, Marc Brys, has faced criticism regarding squad selection.

The DRC and Gabon, both considered underdogs, will aim to capitalize on their stronger run in the group stages. Gabon has never qualified for a World Cup, making this an essential moment in their football history.

With high stakes and no room for error, these matches promise to deliver thrilling action and potential surprises as Africa’s top teams battle for a place on the world stage.
