Alabama’s Ty Simpson Projected as Potential First-Round NFL Draft Pick
Tuscaloosa, Alabama — Ty Simpson, Alabama‘s starting quarterback, is gaining attention as a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. After returning to Alabama for his redshirt junior season, Simpson impressively led the Crimson Tide to a 6-1 record, including victories over ranked opponents.
Three NFL scouting sources have reported that Simpson, who has only started seven games, might be the next first-round selection from Alabama’s quarterback arsenal. “Been really impressed with him since the Florida State game [in Week 1],” said an NFL scout. “Great ball placement and decision-making in critical situations. He’s playing better than any QB in the country right now.”
Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 210 pounds, Simpson is currently one of only two Power Four quarterbacks with at least 14 touchdown passes and less than two interceptions this season. He has thrown for 18 touchdowns and only one interception, while adding two rushing touchdowns. His performance has also led him to the top of the SEC in passer rating, averaging 275 passing yards per game.
Simpson’s father serves as a head coach at UT-Martin, which some scouts believe has furthered his football education. While some personnel officers express caution regarding Simpson’s limited starting experience, they acknowledge his advanced skills in a complex offense. According to an NFL scout, “He’s throwing balls into tight windows and putting them with excellent placement. At worst, you have a smart kid who could be a game manager; at best, he’s just getting started with significant upside.”
In Alabama’s recent 37-20 victory over Missouri, Simpson led the offense to four touchdowns, showcasing his growing capabilities. Before this win, he recorded multiple touchdown passes in crucial games against ranked teams and demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure.
Although some scouts remain skeptical, citing concerns over his inexperience and the overall quarterback market, many are beginning to view Simpson’s developing performance more favorably. Should he continue this trajectory, Simpson could be at the forefront of quarterback selections if he opts to enter the NFL draft.
The pay scale for a first-round pick in 2025 ranged significantly, with top selections receiving contracts between $12.2 million and $3.6 million. Teams are closely evaluating players like Simpson, Mendoza, and others in what has become a competitive and variable quarterback class for 2026.
As NFL analysts keep a watchful eye on Simpson, one question remains: will he opt for the draft or leverage the opportunity to advance his game further at Alabama?
