Alexander Zverev Edges Past Alejandro Tabilo in Rome Masters 1000 Semifinals
German tennis star Alexander Zverev showcased his resilience in the Rome Masters 1000 semifinals, battling past the Canadian-born Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in a thrilling three-set encounter.
Zverev, currently ranked 5th in the ATP standings, faced tough resistance but eventually triumphed 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 after a grueling 2 hours and 16 minutes on the court at the iconic Foro Italico.
The German maestro will now advance to his third Rome final, aiming to claim the title against either the American Tommy Paul or the Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who are both unexpected contenders in the tournament.
Alejandro Tabilo, making waves with his impressive run in Rome and a recent victory against world no. 1 Novak Djokovic, dominated the first set with an array of stellar shots and strategy, keeping Zverev on his toes.
In a dramatic turnaround, Zverev regained his composure during the second set, restoring his first serve and managing to push the match into a tiebreak, which he clinched to force a decider.
The final set saw Zverev firmly take control, capitalizing on Tabilo’s evident physical and mental exhaustion, as the Chilean struggled to maintain his earlier intensity in his debut Masters 1000 semifinal.
Zverev reflected on the match, acknowledging Tabilo’s strong performance in the opening set and expressing his relief at turning the tide when it mattered most, setting up his eleventh Masters 1000 final appearance, following in the footsteps of compatriot Boris Becker.
With the Rome final on the horizon, Zverev eyes his 22nd career title, with the last one secured back in September 2023 at the ATP 250 event in Chengdu, China.
As the clay-court season unfolds, Zverev’s resurgence boosts his confidence ahead of Roland-Garros, where the tennis elite, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, are gearing up for a fiercely competitive showdown.
