Amazon Cancels Countdown and Butterfly After One Season Each

LOS ANGELES, CA — Amazon Prime Video has announced the cancellation of its two freshman series, Countdown and Butterfly, after just one season each. The decision was made public on October 10, 2025, following both shows’ brief run on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming originals list.
Countdown, which starred Jensen Ackles as LAPD detective Mark Meachum, premiered in June. The show followed Meachum as he joined a secret task force to investigate the murder of a Department of Homeland Security officer, uncovering a larger conspiracy in Los Angeles. The drama maintained its spot in the top 10 U.S. streaming charts even after its season finale, prompting anticipation for a potential renewal.
“Fingers crossed [Amazon is] still liking what they’re seeing,” Ackles remarked, referencing the show’s strong viewership and audience participation. “It would suck if it just ends there!”
Butterfly, headlined by Daniel Dae Kim, debuted in August as a binge-release series. It focused on Kim’s character, a former U.S. intelligence agent, who returns to action when his troubled past affects his family. Despite its intriguing premise and positive early reception, it too fell short of securing a second season.
Both shows were produced by Amazon MGM Studios, and their cancellations were finalized under the leadership of Vernon Sanders, the outgoing Head of Global TV. Future directions for these series have not yet been disclosed.
Notably, Amazon has renewed several shows, including We Were Liars and Overcompensating, while also deciding to cancel other series such as Motorheads.
